Hold my helmet!

Hold my helmet!

Helmet pouches. You don't usually give a lot of thought to them unless it's not working the way it's supposed to or if you happen to be designing one. I've been thinking about helmet pouches a lot lately. I've heard anecdotes of lost helmets and witnessed people struggling with them in the wind. Many ski backpacks do have a pouch but deploying them isn't necessarily very easy. I set out to make a pouch for Adapt-Alpine 35 skitouring backpack that is both secure and incredibly easy and fast to operate 🎿✨

The design I finally settled on features a dedicated pocket for the pouch that has a very simple flap closure. You simply pull out the helmet pouch, stick the helmet in and attach it to the backpack's webbing loop with a single G-hook. The pouch is designed so that the helmet can't slide out. The pouch is also removable in case you want to use the pocket for something else.

Here's a glimpse into my pattern-making process — a tale of trial and error. After four fabric prototypes hit the discard pile, I turned to paper and tape. Building a model around the helmet, I deciphered the shapes, traced them onto paper, and crafted the pattern. Every detail matters when you're on a mountain. Stay tuned for the unveiling of this piece!
